CNA vs LNA in Arizona

In Arizona a CNA can be a Licensed Nursing Assistant at any time in there career and it is a more impressive title however there are some things to know.

The following was a PowerPoint that I used for class that has been reformatted for this blog.

Arizona State Board of Nursing 12/14/2019

CNA applicants need only meet the minimum federal requirements for CNA certification, and will be issued a certificate after completing an approved CNA program and passing the CNA certification tests. CNAs are required to practice 8 hours every two years to renew their license/certificate. A criminal background check is NOT required, and certification and recertification is free.

The LNA must meet the minimum federal requirements for CNA certification, complete a criminal background check, apply and pay $50.00 to the AZBN.

LNA’s have a higher level of oversight by the Board prior to and after issuance of the LNA license. LNAs are required to practice a minimum of 160 hours (20; 8 hour shifts) every two years to renew their license.

If you get into trouble as a CNA you answer to the Office of Inspector General.

As an LNA you answer by the Arizona State Board on Nursing which has broader jurisdiction for any act of unprofessional conduct.

Office of Inspector General, U.S. Department of Health and Human Services

The Office of Inspector General for the United States Department of Health and Human Services is charged with identifying and combating waste, fraud, and abuse in the HHS’s more than 300 programs, including Medicare and programs conducted by agencies within HHS, such as the Food and Drug Administration, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and the National Institutes of Health.

The Arizona Board of Nursing (AZBN)

The Arizona Board of Nursing is an organization that aims at promoting the welfare of the public by making sure all nurses in the state are qualified and certified. The board offers a wide range of certifications and issues licenses to competent individuals.

Things to Consider

The maybe pay is the same for LNA and CNA.

Having an LNA may not impress HR. Although it will look better to the people you are serving.

LNA costs more money to obtain and renew.

$100.00 at time of application, and $50.00 upon renewal.

Is being a Nursing Assistant your final goal? If you plan to become a PCT or higher in 2 years or less is paying that extra money worth it?

However there are advantages The main advantages are if you have plans to work in

Law Enforcement or Government Agency such as the VA, Bureau of Indian Affairs, The Prisons due to greater background checks.

Plans on going into business for yourself such as alternative medicine (herbalist, homeopathy, and acupuncture).

Working out of state such as a Travel Nursing Assistant. In addition to that some hospitals prefer or require the LNA title.
